DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The department of microbiology started in the year 1988. The department has well experienced faculty consisting of 5 senior professors, 5 assistant professors along with the support staff consisting of laboratory technicians and laboratory assistants.

The department is actively involved in training the undergraduate students of medicine of SDUMC and B.S.C nursing students of Sri Devaraj Urs nursing college. In 2004, MCI granted permission to start MD course in microbiology and each year one MD student is admitted till date we have 5 MD students of which 2 students have successfully completed the course.

Facilities: The department caters to diagnostic services of R.L.Jalappa hospital which is 825 bedded multi-specialty hospital. Apart from the routine diagnostic work we have round the clock services catering to emergency investigations. The department is well equipped with the latest equipments to carry out diagnostic tests in Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology and Parasitology.

The Fluorescent Microscope with dark ground, phase contrast attachments is routinely used in the diagnosis of Tuberculosis, Leptospirosis and in fungal infections.

Highlights:

In view of the academic and educational achievements the university has recognized the department for starting the PhD courses in Medical Microbiology. The department of Microbiology plays a major role in Hospital infection control committee, which decides on policies of the infection control and antibiotic usage in patient care. The quality of the tests conducted are regularly assessed by external quality control agency established by CMC Vellore. The department also participates in investigating outbreaks of infections in hospital and epidemics reported in and around Kolar district.






Conferences:

Every year CME is conducted by the department of Microbiology in association with Indian association of Microbiologists-Karnataka chapter and Sri Devaraj Urs University, Kolar.
