DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY


1. Introduction:


Physiology is one of the Basic science subject studied in phase I of MBBS course. It involves the study of normal functioning of all the organs in the human body with its clinical application.Dept of Physiology was started in the year 1986 offering only undergraduates course.This department was later upgraded as a postgraduate department in 2003.

We also teach Nursing students (BSc & GNM) coming from college of Nursing & School of Nursing (Sister Concern of this institution).

2. Programme Offered:

  • Undergraduate Medical course (Recognized by MCI)
  • Postgraduate course in Physiology (Recognized by MCI), three seats per year.
  • BSc. (Nursing) and Diploma in Operation Theatre Technician (OT Tech).





3. Facilities:


This department is well equipped to train I year Medical student. There is a Hematology lab., Human Physiology lab., Clinical lab and computer peripheral for computer Assisted teaching for undergraduates as per MCI regulation.

The department also has a Pulmonary function lab, Nerve conduction lab and an Exercise physiology lab with a separate Research lab along with department library for reference to train postgraduate students as per MCI regulation.

The department also extends its service to the patients attending R.L.Jalappa Hospital for pulmonary function and Nerve conduction.

7. Highlights:


Staff members actively take part in the various programmes conducted by MEU to improve teaching skills. They also attended CME’s conducted by the APPI local chapter on a regular basis. CME’s are conducted annually in the department.

Dr. Nachal Annamalai attended the NTTC programme at JIPMER in February this year. Dr. Vinutha Shankar attended National Workshop on “Assesment Methods for Learning Evaluation in Basic Medical Sciences” in September 2008.With this experience we hope design a more standardized evaluation of practical and clinical skills.

Dr. Vinutha Shankar has registered for Fellowship programme offered by Faimer at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center.
A mock PG entrance exam in the form of MCQ’s was conducted in December for House surgeons to prepare them for PG entrance exam.

The staff attend and present papers at state level and National level conferences annually. They also attend Fellowship programme offered by Faimer at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center.
