DEPARATMENT OF SURGERY
1.Introduction.
Department of Surgery started functioning in the year 1986-87 and the first batch of students in clinicals in surgery commenced in the year 1989. Civil hospital K.G.F, BGML Hospital,KGF. BEML, Hospital KGF, & SNRH, Kolar were initially attached to our Medical college for Clinical facilities purpose to train U.G. Students. Our own well equipped 800 bed hospital was commenced in the year 1995. At present it is well equipped with all Major departments and offering services in Superspeciality like Urosurgery, Plastic surgery, Pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and Surgical oncology. The college and Hospital is situated on the highway amidst green surroundings.
Post graduate courses in surgery were started in the year 1996 with an intake of 2 students initially & increased to 4 students subsequently
HODs from 1-1-1987 to till date.

Activities:
Department of surgery with its highly skilled and dedicated staff offers patient care to people not only in and around Kolarbut also neighbour district of A.P. & Tamil Nadu
Superspecialities like Neurosurgery, Surgical Oncology, Pediatric surgery, Plastic Surgery Urology, Cardio thoracic surgery, are attached to the dept of surgery
Deparatment organises Surgical teaching and training of MBBS & MS students. Being situated on highway offers treatment in surgical emergency and trauma care all round the clock.
The operation theatres are well equipped with facilities for Laparoscopy procedure.
As part of our outreach Programme, department organises and takes part in medical health check up camps atleast once a week in villages in and around Kolar.
The OPD Department is situated in a well laid out OPD Block with adequate facilities to examine male and female patients separately. A demonstration room for demonstrating interesting cases for UG and PG students is attached to theOPD.
The dept is housed in the Post graduate block with separate chamber for the HOD and other Professors & staff members. The Dept, is computerised and having LCD projector museum and seminar hall. The dept. libirary is well equipped with latest books for references.
The dept. of Surgery has 6 units each unit headed by Profesor/Asso.Prof & assisted by Asst.Prof /Lect./Senior and .Junior Resident.
UG teaching consists of daily bedside clinics and tutorials/demonstration classes in the afternoon.
For the freshers a two week intensive is coaching conducted to orient the new students to the hospital, its way of working ,O.P.D,. operation theatre etc.
Each term of students has one Theory classes a week.
PG/ teachng consists of daily bedside clinicals, Journal club, subject seminar & mortality meet. P.G. Students are rotated among all six units to have better exposure. They are also posted to the various superspeciality at our hospitals and for further training at Jain hospital, KMIO & NIMHANS Bangalore.
All the students are always encouraged to take part in research programme and to attend work shop, seminars, conferences at state/ national level.
Regular Internal assessment tests are conducted to both UG & PG students to assess the progress and identify poor achievers.
