DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE

Introduction:

Community Medicine is a specific multidisciplinary subject necessary for those engaged in the delivery of health care. The Goal of the Dept. of Community Medicine is "To communicate knowledge on the causes and prevention of disease in the population, on the promotion of health, understanding of primary health care, on the optimal delivery of health services for undergraduate students and to promote postgraduate studies and research." Graduates of medicine will be able to possess the skills and knowledge needed to practice Preventive Medicine in a broad range of civilian and military settings.

Programme Offered:

The duration of the programme shall be for three and half years from semester I to VII. The subjects taught includes Health and Disease concepts, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, research methodology, medical sociology, population sciences, Specific Infectious and non-communicable diseases and their prevention and control, Health and Environment, Nutrition and Health, Health economics, Health education, Health systems, Health care, Health care of special groups in the community, national health programmes and International health. During the internship training students are engaged in full time 2 month training in the delivery of primary health care services in rural and urban communities.

Facilities:

Lecture halls are equipped with multimedia devices. The laboratory is equipped with instruments and facilities to undertake public health laboratory examinations. The library is stocked with recent editions of Indian and international authored textbooks, monographs and periodicals. Computers with internet facilities exists for teaching and research purposes.
3 rural Primary Health Centres and 1 urban health centre are attached to the Dept. of Community Medicine to provide community health care services and for teaching and training purposes. The clinical and diagnostic facility at Sri R L Jalappa Hospital in Kolar is also utilized. There are vehicles for transport of students, interns, faculty and staff to the health centres and communities. Hostel facilities are available at the rural health training centres.
